The University of Hawaii’s Shidler College of Business has received a $1m donation from the Family Business Center of Hawaii to establish a new professorship at the university to teach and help promote the importance of the sector to the local economy.
Ken Gilbert, chair of the FBCH, said in a statement about the donation: “The Family Business Center of Hawaii distinguished professorship recognizes the need to support Hawaii’s family-owned organizations with the academic skills that are necessary to ensure the ability to perpetuate these organizations and equip their future leaders."
University of Hawaii’s foundation president Donna Vuchinich said: "Family businesses are the bedrock of all local economies. Here in Hawaii, they are vital to growth and sustainability of our communities and cultural vitality.”
The donation was made possible by the support of businesses throughout Hawaii, many of them family owned.
