Six notable family business CEOs with MBAs

Family businesses aren’t as populated with MBAs as non-family businesses, especially among their family owners. But here are six members from family owners who have MBAs - and who are also CEOs.

The fourth generation of the founders of George Weston Ltd, Galen Weston Junior has an MBA from Columbia University. Galen, 45, took the helm at the head of the family business last year when his father retired. George Weston Ltd is one of Canada’s biggest food processing and distribution companies.


Brendan Bechtel, CEO and chairman of Bechtel Group - MBA Stanford

Brendan is the fifth generation member of the Bechtel family to lead the eponymous business, which in revenue terms is the biggest construction and civil engineering group in the US. He was appointed CEO last year and has an MBA from Stanford, just like his father and grandfather also have, both of whom also ran the San Francisco-based business.


Charles Butt, CEO and chairman of HEB Grocery Company - MBA Harvard

The third generation of the Butt family that started one of America’s biggest supermarket chains, Charles Butt gained an MBA from Harvard. But that was some time ago. Butt is now 80 and isn’t about to retire anytime soon from the top position at the Texas-based supermarket chain.

Desmarais Junior is the son of Paul Desmarais Senior, who took over the Power Corporation of Canada in the late 1960s. Desmarais Jr. replaced his father at the top of the family business more than 20 years. That's after moving up the ranks of the Canadian conglomerate and gaining an MBA from INSEAD in France.

 

Spencer Fung, CEO of Li & Fung - MBA Northeastern University

Spencer Fung gained an MBA from Northeastern University and has been CEO of the Hong Kong trading company since 2014. He is the fourth generation of the Fung family to head the business, which is one of Asia’s biggest trading companies. Fung’s father also has an MBA - from Harvard, where Spencer did his undergraduate studies.

 

Hubertus von Baumbach, Chairman of the board of managing directors and CEO of  C.H. Boehringer Sohn - MBA MIT

Hubertus von Baumbach the fourth generation member of the Boehringer pharmaceutical family who is now also its head. He gained an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
