This week’s family/private investment office deals

Given the extent of the deals in the family/principal investment office world, Family Capital has replaced our Deal of the Week, with This Week’s Top Three. The weekly feature will look at the three most compelling deals done by these group over the last week. To see the first one, click here. 

Secondary Market 

Cascade Ventures, an investment group owned by Ukrainian billionaire Vitaliy Khomutynnik, has invested in Discord, a voice, video, and text chat app. Cascade invested an unspecified amount in the San Francisco-based group. 

Unspecified Rounds

Canica, an investment group owned by Stein Erik Hagen, a Norwegian billionaire, along with Soleus Capital, an investment group owned by Guy Levy, a hedge fund manager, have invested in Galecto Biotech, a Danish biotech group. Canica and Soleus along with 14 other investors committing $64 million to the biotech group. 

D1 Capital Partners, an investment group founded by former hedge fund manager Daniel Sundheim, has invested in Alkami Technology, a fintech platform. D1 was one of four investors committing $140 million to the Dallas-based group. 

Seed

Vulcan Capital, Jody Allen’s investment group set up by her brother Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has seeded Intelage, a trade and logistics platform. Vulcan was one of two investors committing $3.5 million to the Seattle-based startup.  

HOF Capital, a New York City venture group set up by Onsi Sawiris, the son of Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, has invested in BukuWarung, a startup building an accounting and credit management platform. HOF was one of 17 investors committing an unspecified amount to the Indonesian startup. 

Tal capital, a New Dehli-based investment group owned by Neeru Kumar, a textile businesswoman, has invested in Finom, a fintech business. Tal was one of seven investors committing €10.3 million to the Amsterdam-based startup. 

HH Investments, a Singapore-based investment group owned by Maarten Hemmes, has invested in Aktivo, a healthcare group. HH seeded the Singapore-based startup with an unspecified sum. 

Series A

Ernström & Co, a Swedish investment company owned by the Hobohm-Hielte family, has invested in Annotell, an analytics and annotation platform. Ernström & Co was one of two investors committing €5.8 million to the Swedish group. 

Genesis Merchant Capital, a New York City investment group owned by brothers Steve and Martin Sands, who made their money in asset management, has invested in Babson Diagnostics, a biotech group. Genesis was one of four investors committing $13.7 million to the Austin-based group. 

Vulcan Capital, Jody Allen’s investment group set up by her brother Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has invested in Attunely, a machine learning platform for debt collection. Vulcan was one of three investors committing $6 million to the Seattle-based group. 

Space Capital, an investment group owned by US investor Chad Anderson, along with GingerBread Capital, an investment group owned by Linnea Conrad Roberts, who is married to George R. Roberts, a billionaire and one of the original partners of private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Robert, and Waverly Capital, the investment group of Gilad Hayeem, the co-founder of hedge fund Marble Bar Asset Management, have invested in Camera IQ, a camera experience manager platform. The investors were among seven who committed $5 million to the Los Angeles-based group. 

Capricorn Investment Group, Jeff Skoll’s investment fund, has invested in LARQ, which says it helps people access pristine drinking water easily and sustainably. Capricorn was one of nine investors committing $10.7 million into the San Francisco-based group. 

Tellus Bioventures, an investment group set up by biotech investor and entrepreneur Lonnie Moulder, has invested in Aegle Therapeutics, a biotech group. Tellus was one of five investors committing $6.5 million to the Miami-based group. 

Bedrock Capital, an investment group set up by tech entrepreneurs Geoff Lewis and Eric Stromberg, has invested in R-Zero, a healthcare group. Bedrock was one of two investors committing $15 million to the San Francisco-based group. Bedrock has also invested in PayMongo, a payment processing platform based in the Philippines. Bedrock along with three other investors committed $12 million to PayMongo.

Webb Investment Network, the investment office of Maynard Webb, has invested in Noyo, a language learning platform. Webb was one of seven investors committing $12.5 million to the Boston-based group. 

Valar Ventures, a New York City-based investment group owned by Peter Thiel, has invested in Bitpanda, a centralized crypto exchange. Valar was one of two investors committing $52 million to the Austrian-based group. 

Series B  

Nepenthe Investments, a Palo Alto-based investment group recently set up by Stuart Taylor, a US and UK based entrepreneur and investor, has invested in Nuvia, which develops processors. Nepenthe was one of 13 investors committing $240 million to the San Francisco-based group. 

Agronomics, a listed food investment group founded by Richard Reed, a UK-based entrepreneur who co-founded Innocent Drinks before selling it to the Coca-Cola Company, has invested in Mosa Meat, a slaughter-free hamburger made directly from cow cells. Agronomics was one of five investors committing €55 million to the Dutch group. 

Winton Ventures, a venture group owned by David Harding, a UK-based hedge fund investor, has invested in Ripjar, a data intelligence company. Winton was one of three investors committing $36.8 million to the UK-based group.  

Casdin Capital, Eli Casdin’s New York City investment fund, has invested in Monte Rosa Therapeutics, a biotech group. Casdin was one of 10 investors committing $96 million to the Swiss-based group. 

Raptor Group, the investment office of former hedge-fund manager Jim Pallotta, has invested in Rally, a fintech platform. Raptor was one of six investors committing $17 million to the New York City group. 

Series C

Geneva-based Celeste Management, an investment office owned by a member of the Louis-Dreyfus family, has invested in keepMED, which is developing a new device for the treatment of sleep apnea. Celeste was one of eight investors committing €13 million to the Israel-based group. 

Claridge, the Canadian family office of Stephen Bronfman, has invested in Busbud, a mobile app and platform that connects passengers to bus operators. Claridge was one of seven investors committing C$15 million to the Montreal-based group. 

Series D 

EE Capital, the Singapore investment group of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Luiz Saverin, has invested in Hopscotch, which says it provides an insider access to international brands for babies, kids, and moms. EE Capital led the $25 million investment in the Mumbai-based group, eight others participated. 

Skip Capital, the private investment office of the Australian tech billionaire Scott Farquhar, together with Square Peg Capital, a venture fund with strong links to one of Australia’s wealthiest families, the Libermans, have invested in Airwallex, a fintech platform. The two investors committed $40 million to the Hong Kong-based group.
