This week’s family/private investment office deals

Private Equity

L Catterton, a private equity group with close links to Groupe Arnault, the family-owned holding company of Bernard Arnault, has invested in Reliance Jio, a Mumbai-based telecoms company. L Catterton together with one other investor committed INR64.4 billion ($845.7 million) to the group.  

Unspecified Rounds

GingerBread Capital, an investment group owned by Linnea Conrad Roberts, who is married to George R. Roberts, a billionaire and one of the original partners of private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, along with Rose Culinary Ventures, an investment group set up by prominent Californian restaurant investor and entrepreneur,  Rose Culinary, have invested in Shaka Tea, which makes a line of herbal iced teas. The two investors joined three others with a total commitment of $2.3 million for the Hawaii-based group. 

Atomico, the venture-capital business owned and led by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, has invested in OnTruck, a logistics platform. Atomico was one of six investors committing €17 million to the Madrid, Spain-based group. 

Seed

Pratithi Investment Trust, the family investment vehicle of Indian-based Kris Gopalakrishnan, has invested in Myelin Foundry, which is developing AI on video, voice, and sensor data platforms. Pratithi seeded the Indian startup with an unspecified sum. 

Segnalita, an Austrian family investment group owned by Markus Langes-Swarovski, has invested in Prewave, an advanced machine learning research platform. Segnalita was one of five investors seeding the Vienna-based startup with an unspecified amount.

CEAS Investments, a Delray, Florida-based investment office believed to be owned by Leslie Alexander, a billionaire entrepreneur and financier who previously owned the National Basketball Association side, the Houston Rockets, has invested in CognitOps, which is developing artificial intelligence-driven supply chain software. CEAS was one of four investors seeding the Austin, Texas-based startup with $3 million. 

Pfeffer Capital, a London based investment group owned by former KKR partner, John Pfeffer, has invested in River Financial, a Bitcoin trading platform for long-term investors. Pfeffer was one of eight investors committing $5.7 million to the San Francisco-based startup.  

Series A 

RIT Capital Partners, a UK listed investment trust owned by Jacob Rothschild, together with  H. Barton Asset Management, an investment group owned by the former pro-American footballer turned investor, Harris Barton, have invested in Haus, a real estate lending platform. The two investors joined six others with a commitment of $15.8 million to the San Francisco-based group. 

Junson Capital, the Hong Kong-based investment office of the Cai Kui family, has invested in WiBotic, a wireless power platform to charge aerial, mobile and aquatic robot systems. Junson was one of six investors committing $5.7 million to the Seattle-based group. 

F-Prime Capital, a venture group owned by the Johnson family, owners of Fidelity Investments, together with Casdin Capital, a New York City-based investment group owned by Eli Casdin, have invested in Verve Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech group. The two investors together with four others committed $63 million to the group. 

Series B  

AO Invest, a Davos, Switzerland-based investment group owned by Swiss entrepreneur Michel Orsinger, has backed Augmedics, a provider of augmented reality surgical image guidance solutions. AO Invest was one of three investors committing $15 million to the Illinois-based group. 

EQT Ventures, the listed Wallenberg family-backed venture group together with Franz Haniel & Cie, a German family investment group owned by the Haniel family, have invested in Wandelbots, a platform that enables non-programmers to train industrial robots to complete precision tasks. The two groups invested alongside four others with a total commitment of $30 million for the Dresden, Germany-based group. 

Emerson Collective, the investment group owned by Laurene Powell, has invested in  Shattuck Labs, an Austin, Texas-based biotech group. Emerson was one of nine investors committing $118 million to the group.  

Loeb Enterprises, an investment office owned by Michael Loeb, a New York City-based publishing entrepreneur, has invested in Steady, an app that finds part-time and temporary work that fits location, interests, and schedule. Loeb was one of five investors committing $15 million to the Atlanta, Georgia-based group. 

Section 32, an investment firm owned by Bill Maris, has invested in Autobahn Therapeutics, a San Diego based biotech group. Section 32 was one of ten investors committing $76 million to the group. 

Atomico, the venture-capital business owned and led by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, has invested in Onna, a data integration platform. Atomico led the $27 million round in the New York City-based group; four other investors participated.  

Series D 

Lupa Systems, James Murdoch’s New York City-based investment group, together with Tao Capital Partners, the family office of Nicholas Pritzker, have invested in GreenLight Biosciences, which is developing sustainable chemicals and fuels. The two investors joined eight others in a commitment worth $102 million for the Medford, Massachusetts-based group.  

Claridge Israel, a joint venture between Claridge, the Canadian-based family office of Stephen Bronfman, and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, a pension fund, has invested in Infinidat, a data storage software platform. Claridge Israel was one of five investors in the Waltham, Massachusetts-based group. The amount committed in the round wasn’t disclosed.
