New managing director at one of Europe’s biggest family offices

Athos Service, the family office of brothers Thomas and Andreas Strüngmann, the German pharma billionaires, has appointed a new managing director.

Michael Riemenschneider takes up the new position after leaving his job late last year as head of Reimann Investors, a family office owned by members of the Reimann family.

Riemenschneider, 45, will work alongside fellow managing directors Helmut Jeggle and Thomas Maier.

The former Boston Consulting Group manager joins Athos at a time when the Munich-based family office is prospering from its investments in one of Europe’s top biotech groups, BioNTech. The German-based pharmaceutical group is developing a vaccine for Covid-19 and is behind a number of important immunology advances for cancer treatment.

Athos invested in BioNTech, now listed on NASDAQ, at an early stage. BioNTech has since received investment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the European Investment Bank, and Temasek Holdings, the Singaporean sovereign wealth group.

Riemenschneider left Reimann after more than 13 years at the family office. It was speculated early this year that he departed because Reimann was cutting back its interest in new direct investments in private equity and venture.

Riemenschneider’s departure was followed by Noel Zeh, who specialised in venture investing for Reiman. Zeh later joined ALSTIN Capital, a venture capital fund based in Munich, connected to German entrepreneur Carsten Maschmeyer.
