This week’s family/private investment office deals

Family Capital’s This Week’s Top Three investment deals involve two Swiss-based family offices, and a newly set up investment office backed an influential art newsletter. More details here. 

Real Estate

Tribus, a Grosse Pointe-based investment office of the Vreeken family, who sold manufacturing group TransNav in 2018, has invested in a 28-story office tower located in downtown Detroit for an undisclosed price. 

Fairglen Farms, owned by Sydney-based Marinya Capital, a family office owned by members of the Fairfax family, has acquired farms in the Australian state of Queensland worth A$23 million. See below Marinya’s investment in a plant-based food company, which could be linked to the move. 

Unspecified Rounds

Breyer Capital, Jim Breyer’s investment group, has invested in DISCO, a legaltech company. Breyer was one of five investors committing $60 million to the Austin, based group. 

Seed

Lupa Systems, James Murdoch’s investment group, has invested in Synthetaic, a big data startup. Lupa led the $3.5 million round in the Delafield, Wisconsin-based company; two other investors participated. 

GingerBread Capital, an investment group owned by Linnea Conrad Roberts, who is married to George R. Roberts, a billionaire and one of the original partners of private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, has invested in Twentyeight Health, which offers telemedicine services for women. GingerBread was one of ten investors committing $5.1 million to the New York City-based startup. 

Series A

Lonsdale Capital, the family office of Jason Choo, a Singaporean investor, has invested in ShopUp, a Bangladesh-based e-commerce platform. Lonsdale was one of five investors committing $22.5 million to ShopUp.  

Eldridge, a US-based investment group owned by billionaire Todd Boehly, together with WISE Ventures, an investment group owned by members of the Wilf family, have invested in VENN, a 24/7 post-cable network aimed at gaming, esports and entertainment audiences. The two investors joined four others in an investment worth $26 million for the New York City-based group.

Jeannette Fürstenberg, a German investor who co-founded La Famiglia, a venture group backed by a number of prominent European family business dynasties, has invested in Pulley, a fintech platform. Fürstenberg along with 11 other investors committed $10 million to the San Francisco-based group. 

Valor Capital Group, an investment group owned by Clifford Sobel, a former US ambassador to Brazil, has invested in Sami, a Brazil-based health group. Valor co-led the round with one other investor, worth BRL86 million ($15.3 million); three other investors participated. 

Series B 

Marinya Capital, a Sydney based investment group owned by members of the Fairfax family, together with Li Ka-shing’s Horizons Ventures, have invested in v2food, a plant-based meat company. The two joined eight others in an investment worth A$77 million for the Australian group. 

Moffett Investment Holdings, an investment group owned by Robert Moffett, an Irish entrepreneur, has invested in Neuromod Devices, a maker of medical devices. Moffett was one of five investors committing €10.5 million to the Dublin-based group. 

Series D

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, together with Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective, and the Wallenberg-backed EQT Ventures, have invested in Handshake, a college career network platform. The three investors joined six others in committing $80 million in funding to the San Francisco-based group. 

Series E

L Catterton, the Bernard Arnault backed private equity group, has invested in 98point6, a Seattle-based healthcare group. L Catterton was one of three investors committing $118 million to the group. 

Series H

Soros Fund Management, George Soros’ investment group, has backed Proterra, which makes zero-emission, battery-electric buses. Soros Fund Management was one of four investors committing $200 million to the San Francisco-based group.
