This week’s family/private investment office deals

Post-IPO Equity

Boxer Capital, an investment office owned by UK billionaire Joe Lewis, has invested in Solid Biosciences, a biotech group. Boxer was one of eight investors committing $90 million to the Massachusetts-based group. 

Apeiron Investment Group, the Malta-based family office of German investor Christian Angermayer, has invested in MagForce, a biotech group. Apeiron was one of two investors backing the Berlin-based group with €4.7 million. 

Private Equity

The Najafi Companies, an investment/holding group owned by Jahm Najafi, an Iranian-American businessman, has invested in McLaren Racing, a Grand Prix racing group. The Najafi Companies was one of three investors committing £185 million to the UK-based group. 

PAX Holdings, a UK family office set up by Tom Hall, an online gaming entrepreneur, has bought Sporting News, one of the US’s oldest sports publications. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.  

Unspecified Rounds

ELFH Holding, an investment office owned by the Berninghausen family in Germany, together with Wi Ventures, owned by German green investor Matthias Willenbacher, have invested in Sono Motors, which is developing a solar-powered car. The two investors joined three others in committing €45 million to the Munich-based group. 

Puffin Point, a UK-based investment office owned by the Ogden family, has invested in Kinomica, a biotech group. Puffin Point was one of five investors committing £3.9 million to the UK-based group. 

KIKK Capital, an investment group set up by two former CEOs of Dutch multinationals  Ben Noteboom (Randstad Holding) and Johan van der Werf (Aegon), has invested in PEPSCOPE, a biotech group. KIKK was one of three investors committing €4.3 million to the Dutch group. KIKK also led the round. 

Seed

Emerson Collective, Laurene Powell-Jobs social-led investment group, together with Collective Capital, a UK investment group recently set up by Rob Wills, a financier and former chief of staff of Mar Pincus’ family office, have backed Planet FWD, a regenerative food platform. The two investors joined five others in committing $2.5 million to the San Francisco-based startup. Emerson led the round. 

Mark Pincus, probably through his family office Workplay Ventures, has invested in ForeVR, a gaming company. Pincus was one of five investors committing $1.5 million to the San Francisco-based startup.

EQT Ventures, the Wallenberg family-backed listed venture group, has backed Kive, an AI platform for the creative arts. EQT was one of two investors committing €1.5 million to the Stockholm-based startup.

EQT has also backed Curb Food, a food delivery group. EQT Ventures backed the Stockholm-based startup with €3.2 million. 

Peak Capital, an Amsterdam-based investment group owned by Heleen Dura van Oord, who is a member of the family who owns the huge Dutch dredging company Van Oord, has backed Stack, an enterprise software group. Peak was one of two backers committing $850,000 to the Amsterdam-based startup.  

Wild Ventures, an investment group owned by John Durant, has invested in Serenity Kids, a food company. Wild was one of seven investors committing $3 million to the Austin, Texas-based startup. 

Survam Partners, a family office owned by Suman Kant Munjal, a member of the family who owns the Indian manufacturer Hero, has backed Hudle, a sports and fitness booking platform. Survam backed the New Delhi-based startup with one other investor; the investment amount wasn’t specified. 

Perot Jain, a Dallas-based investment group set up by  Ross Perot Jr. and Anurag Jain, has invested in DASH Systems, an air-transportation technology group. Perot Jain was one of seven investors committing $8 million to the Californian-based startup. 

F-Prime Capital, the Johnson family, owners of Fidelity, backed venture group, has invested in Mozper, a fintech group. F-Prime was one of six investors committing $3.6 million to the Mexico City-based startup. 

Series A 

Invus, a New York City-based investment business backed by Eric Wittouck, Belgium’s richest individual, together with Casdin Capital, Eli Casdin’s investment fund, have backed Faze Medicines, a biotech group. Invus was one of eight investors committing $81 million to the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based group.

CPT Capital, the investment office of UK-based private equity specialist Jeremy Coller, has invested in Remilk., a developer of animal-free dairy products. CPT was one of 11 investors committing $11.3 million to the Israel-based group.  

Rinkelberg Capital, the London-based investment office of Corinne Vigreux who co-founded the Dutch consumer electronics company TomTom, has invested in Growth Tribe, an EdTech platform. Rinkelberg backed the Amsterdam-based group with €2 million after backing them early this year. 

Picus Capital, an investment group owned by Germany tech entrepreneur Alexander Samwer, has invested in Cove, a co-living real estate group. Picus was one of seven investors committing $7.6 million to the Singaporean company. 

Series B  

Invus, a New York City-based investment business backed by Eric Wittouck, Belgium’s richest individual, has backed Locana, a biotech group. Invus was one of 10 investors committing $100 million to the San Diego, California-based group. 

Trog Hawley Capital, a Florida-based investment office owned by the Ryan family, has backed iraLogix, a fintech group. Trog Hawley was one of four backers committing $7.5 million to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based group. 

HOF Capital, a New York City venture group set up by Onsi Sawiris, the son of Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, has backed CHAI, a mobile payments platform. HOF was one of five investors committing $60 million to the South Korean group. 

Belgium-based Verlinvest, the family investment group for the Spoelberch and de Mévius families, has backed Wakefit, an Indian mattress maker. Verlinvest led the round, which was worth INR1.9 billion ($25.8 million); one other investor participated. 

Mark Cuban Companies, owned by US billionaire Mark Cuban, together with Darco Capital, and investment group owned by David J. Adelman, have invested in Osaro, an AI deep learning platform. The two investors joined five other investors in an unspecified round. Darco led the round.  

Omidyar Network, the impact investment group owned by Pierre and Pam Omidyar, has invested in Pickrr, an Indian logistics company. Omidyar was one of two investors committing $4 million to the New Delhi-based group.  

GingerBread Capital, an investment group owned by Linnea Conrad Roberts, who is married to George R. Roberts, a billionaire and one of the original partners of private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, has invested in Workit Health, a healthcare group. GingerBread was one of four investors committing $12 million to the Anne Arbor, Michigan-based group. 

Series C

Kinnevik, the Swedish investment group owned by the Stenbeck, Klingspor and von Horn families, has backed Cityblock, a healthcare group. Kinnevik was one of six investors committing $160 million to the Brooklyn, New York-based group. 

Valar Ventures, an investment group backed by Peter Thiel, together with Breyer Capital, Jim Breyer’s investment group, have invested in Bestow, an insurance technology platform. Valar was one of six investors committing $70 million to the Dallas-based group. 

Series D

ACE & Company, a Geneva-based investment group owned by Adam Said, the son of Fouad Said, an Egyptian American investor, has invested in NetGuardians, a fintech group. ACE was one of three investors committing CHF17 million to the Swiss group. ACE jointly led the round. 

D1 Capital Partners, an investment group founded by former hedge fund manager Daniel Sundheim, has invested in Bolt, a food delivery group. D1 led a €150 million investment in the Estonian-based group; one other investor participated.
