Those hedge fund managers and their family offices

American Investment Holdings/Vinik Family Office

Jeff Vinik, a well-known hedge fund manager who managed Vinik Asset Management until he closed it down in 2013. He’s since gone on to invest in a host of investments, not least, real estate in Tampa, Florida, co-investing with Bill Gates. 

Atreaus Family 

Todd Edgar converted his hedge fund Atreaus Capital into Atreaus Family, his personal investment office, in 2019, after it had been apparently struggling for some time. 

CAM Capital 

Bruce Kovner is one of the titans of the hedge fund industry, who retired from Caxton Associates he founded way back in 1983. After retiring he set up his own investment group, CAM Capital in 2012. 

Chescapmanager

Traci Lerner is one of the few women to reach the top of the hedge fund world, but eventually succumbed to converting her hedge fund into a family office in 2016. 

Cohen Private Ventures/Point72 Asset Management

Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen rose from his insider trader prosecution in 2012 to reestablish his investing prowess with his own assets. He converted his hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors in Point72 Asset Management, effectively a family office until it started accepting outside money a few years ago. He also owns family office Cohen Private Ventures

Duquesne Family Office

Another titan of the hedge fund sector, Stanley Druckenmiller, worked with George Soros before going out on his own with Duquesne Capital, which he closed down and converted into a family office in 2010. 

EOZ Global

Zoe Cruz set up hedge fund Voras Capital Management in 2010 after a stellar Wall Street career.  She closed it in 2012 and converted it to a family office, EOZ Cruz. 

Euclidean Capital

Jim Simons is the King of hedge funds and arguably one of the greatest living investors. Simons founded Renaissance Technologies, the Long Island-based hedge fund, whose Medallion fund is among the world’s best-ever performing funds. Simons’ family office Euclidean Capital is also one of the most innovative family offices. 

Everblue Management

Eric Mindich shut down his hedge fund in 2017 and now he managers his family office, Everblue. 

Hite Capital Management

Larry Hite is one of the forefathers of the hedge fund industry, founding his trading platform Mint Investments in the early 1980s. He now concentrates on managing his own money through Hite Capital Management

Inkblot Capital 

Richard Rieger helped manage hedge fund Kingdon Capital Management with its founder Mark Kingdon until stepping down from full-time management in 2014 and concentrating on his own investments with his family office, Inkblot Capital. 

Jones Family Office

Another legend in the hedge fund sector, Paul Tudor Jones founded Tudor Investment Corporation in his 20s. The hedge fund became one of the most successful in the sector and continues to successfully operate today.  

Kendall Family Investment/Moore Strategic Capital

Louis Bacon is up there among the best hedge fund managers around with his Moore Capital, but these days Bacon is developing a reputation as one of the most innovative investors around with his investment group Moore Strategic Capital. 

Kokino

Brian Olson co-founded in 1999 hedge fund Viking Global Investors but has since left and now runs his family office, Kokino. 

Libra Advisors

Libra Advisors was founded by Ranjan Tandon as a hedge fund and converted into a family office in 2012. 

Smith Management

Randall Duncan “Randy” Smith founded hedge fund group Alden Global Capital in 2007, which is famous for buying US newspaper groups. 

Soros Fund Management

George Soros converted his famous hedge fund Soros Fund Management into a family office in 2011. Now Soros Fund Management has become mostly a private equity and venture investment house, which among other areas is a big investor in eclectic vehicles.  

Table Management

Bill Ackman is best known for his hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management, which he set up in 2004. Pershing continues, but it has witnessed some tough years along the way. Table Management is his family office. 

TOMS Capital

Noam Gottesman is best known for co-founding hedge fund GLG Capital in 1995, which was later sold to the Man Group. His private investment office, TOMS Capital, has been active in a number of areas, but especially SPACs

TRB Advisors

Timothy Barakett founded hedge fund Atticus Capital but closed it in 2010 and set up his family office, TRB Advisors. 

Willoughby Capital Holdings

Dan Och founded hedge fund Och-Ziff Capital Management Group in 1994, but these days is more involved with his family office, Willoughby Capital Holdings. 

Ziff Brothers Investments

The Ziff brothers – Dirk, Robert and Daniel – closed Ziff Brothers Investments to outside money some time ago and now manage their own money through the former hedge fund.
