Tech billionaire’s family office buys airport

A tech billionaire has bought an airport near one of his homes.

Hillspire, the family office of Eric Schmidt, the former CEO and chairman of Google, has bought an airport in upstate New York for an undisclosed sum, according to local sources.

The Kingston-Ulster Airport lies around 100 miles north of New York City and just west of the Hudson River. Schmidt, who according to Forbes is the 96th wealthiest individuals in the world with a fortune estimated at $23.2 billion, has a house near the airport. Overlooking the Hudson River, the house was previously owned by members of John Jacob Astor’s family.

The airport was put up for sale at the end of 2019 and was previously owned by the family of local businessman Michael Zinn, who died in a plane accident in 2005.
