Academic veterans launch family enterprise consultancy

A group of well-known family business consultants and academics have launched a new consultancy, bringing together an unparalleled group of expertise and experience for the sector.

Called Generation6, the Chicago-based consultancy group is the brainchild of three family business experts: Andrew Keyt, Joe Astrachan, and Greg McCann. Each one has established themselves as leaders in the family business advisor area as well as having distinguished careers as academics.

Keyt says Generation6 distinguishes itself from others in the sector by the well-rounded expertise and experience of its team. “All of us have a deep understanding of managerial finance and business strategy, and a best in class understanding of family dynamics and human development.”

Generation6 has launched with 11 advisors, with more than 200 years of experience behind them, says Keyt. This, at least, will ensure it makes a pretty powerful force in the family enterprise consultancy world. Other advisors on Generation6 include Jesus Casado, the secretary-general of the Brussels based lobby group, European Family Businesses, and Claudia Binz Astrachan, who leads the family and business program at Lucerne School of Business.

The name for the new group comes from an observation among the founders that, in general, “sixth-generation enterprising families have learned to effectively instil a sense of responsible and committed stewardship in current and future generations of family owners to ensure their longevity”.

“That’s our mission,” says Keyt. “To assist families in business to make it to the sixth generation and beyond.”

Although based in the US, the consultancy will work with family enterprises and the advisory community around the world, adds Keyt.

The three founding partners certainly don’t lack experience, knowledge and contacts in the family enterprise sector.

Keyt spent 20 years as a professor at Loyola University Chicago’s Family Business Center. He also led the Family Business Network in the US for a number of years and set up his own consulting firm.

Astrachan, who comes from a family business background himself, is one of the leading academics in the family business area and is currently Emeritus Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at Kennesaw State University, where he previously served as executive director of the Cox Family Enterprise Center. He also holds a host of other visiting professorships in the US and Europe.

McCann was the founder and director of the Family Enterprise Center at Stetson University. He also runs his own consulting firm.
