This week’s family investment deals


Family office Serruya Private Equity, which is owned by the Canadian Serruya family, has acquired Atlanta-based Global Franchise Group, which owns a number of retail food businesses, including Great American Cookies and Round Table Pizza. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but GFG was valued at around $700 million earlier last year, according to media reports. Serruya Private Equity co-invested with Lion Capital, a UK private equity group.  

Tavistock Group, the family office of billionaire Joe Lewis, has invested in a US biotech group called Relay Therapeutics. Tavistock was one of 10 investors in a Series C funding round worth $400 million for the startup.

The R-Group, the family office of the Portland, Oregon-based Raviv family, has invested in Megh Computing, an IT startup. The R-Group was one five investors seeding the US group with $1.8 million.

Hong Kong family office/venture group Ironfire Ventures along with Singapore family investment office Shanda Group have invested in Iota Biosciences. Ironfire and Shanda were two of five investors in a Series A funding round worth $15 million for the US biotech group.

Target Hill Capital, a venture group connected to the Ferree family office of Jim Ferree, has invested in PlanIT Impact, a US software group. Target Hill was one of three investors committing $900,000 in a seed round.


The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has invested in Vedanta Biosciences, a US biotech group. The Gates Foundation was one of six investors in a Series C round worth $27 million for the biotech group.
