This week’s family/private investment office deals

The Deal of the Week involves a principal investment office backing a quantum computer startup. More details here. 

Unspecified Rounds

L Catterton, a private equity group with close links to Groupe Arnault, the family-owned holding company of Bernard Arnault, has invested in PetLove, an online store for pet products in Brazil. L Catterton provided PetLove with $23 million in growth capital. 

Irelandia Investments, a Dublin-based investment group owned by aviation entrepreneur Declan Ryan, has invested in CitySwift, a data-driven platform for bus scheduling and networks. Irelandia was one of two investors committing €2 million to the Irish group. 

Convertible Notes

Meyer Equity, an investment group owned by US investor Owen Meyer, has invested an undisclosed sum in Documo, a document automation and workflow platform based in Las Vegas. 

Seed

Mutschler Ventures, a Swiss-based investment group owned by Sylvie Mutschler-von Specht, a member of the family shareholders of Hamburg-based Berenberg Bank, has invested in Smark, an e-commerce platform. Mutschler was one of two investors committing €3.1 million to the Stuttgart-based startup. 

An Indonesian investment group, Prasetia Dwidharma, owned by the Setiadharma family, has invested in Jendela360, a Jakarta based real estate tech platform. Prasetia was one of three investors committing $1 million to the startup.

Financiere Saint James, the Paris-based investment office of Michael Benabou, has invested in Bellman, a real estate platform. Financiere Saint James was one of three investors committing €4 million to the Paris-based startup. 

La Famiglia (The Family) – a venture group owned by a number of prominent European business families including the family owners connected to the giant appliance maker Miele; members of the Siemens family; the Viessmann family, behind the eponymous German family business; the family behind the Austrian luxury group Swarovski, and family owners of the Belgian chemical group, Solvay, together with the Songhurst Group, an investment group owned by Charlie Songhurst, have invested in Back Technologies, a platform that organizes and automates employee requests. La Famiglia led the round, which was worth $3.3 million; Songhurst and five other investors participated in the round for the Berlin-based group.

Bling Capital, an investment group owned by Ben Ling, has invested in MonkeyLearn, a text analysis platform. Bling, which co-led the round, was one of seven investors committing $2.2 million to the San Francisco-based startup. 

Series A 

NB Ventures, a Dubai-based investment group owned by Indian entrepreneur Neelesh Bhatnagar, has invested in Clip the Deal, a multi-brand, multi-retailer platform. NB Ventures was one of three investors committing an undisclosed amount to the Dubai-based group. 

White Rock Capital, a Dallas-based investment group owned by Texas investor Thomas Barton, has invested in RENOVION, a Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based healthcare group. White Rock invested $8.1 million in the group.

Series B 

Ackermans & van Haaren, a listed holding and investment company based in Belgium and owned by the Bertrand, van Baren, and van Haaren families, has invested in Medikabazaar, an online B2B marketplace for medical devices and supplies in India. Ackermans committed INR256 million ($3.3 million) to the Mumbai-based group. 

Sorenson Capital, an investment group owned by the Utah-based Sorenson family, has invested in Botkeeper, a fintech platform. Sorenson was one of nine investors committing $25 million to the Boston-based group. 

The Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust, owned by Jeremy Grantham, co-founder of the Boston-based asset management group GMO, together with Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the cleantech energy group backed by Bill Gates and other high profile billionaires, have backed Quidnet Energy, a technology-driven energy company that powers the carbon-free electric grid. The two investors were among five backers committing $10 million to the Houston-based group. 

Pymwymic (Put Your Money Where Your Meaning Is Community), a Dutch-based impact investment firm backed by a number of wealthy families including members of the Brenninkmeijers and the Dutch Jan van Oord family, has invested in Connecterra, an agtech AI platform. Pymwymic was one of six investors committing €7.8 million to the Amsterdam-based group. 

Drive Capital, an investment group owned by Chris Oslen and Mark Kvamme, has invested in Cyclica, a Toronto-based biotech company. Drive was one of four investors committing CA$23 million to the group. 

Series C 

Kinnevik, the Swedish investment group owned by the Stenbeck, Klingspor and von Horn families, has invested in Cedar, a New York City-based fintech platform. Kinnevik was one of eight investors committing $77 million for the group. 

Drive Capital, see above for ownership, has invested in Immuta, a Boston-based BigData company. Drive was one of eight investors committing $40 million to the group. 

Series D 

Kairos Ventures, an investment group owned by Californian investor Jim Demetriades, has invested in Foldax, a medical device company. Kairos was one of six investors committing $20 million to the Salt Lake City-based group. 

Breyer Capital, Jim Breyer’s investment group, has invested in OJO Labs, a real estate platform. Breyer Capital was one of five investors committing $62.5 million to the Austin, Texas-based group. 

Series E 

WestCap, an investment group owned by US-based Laurence Tosi, has invested in Sonder, a tech-driven hospitality company. WestCap was one of three investors leading the round worth $170 million for the San Francisco-based company
