This week’s family/private investment office deals

Real Estate

Olympus Ventures, the family office of Best Buy founder Richard Schulze, has acquired The Resorts & Residences by CuisinArt in the Caribbean Island of Anguilla. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. 

Private Equity

Groupe Artémis, François Pinault’s family investment vehicle, has invested in Goat Group,  a marketplace for sneakers, apparel, and accessories. Groupe Artémis committed an unspecified amount to the Culver City, Californian-based group. 

Unspecified Rounds

Esas Holding, an Istanbul-based investment group owned by the Şevket Sabancı family, together with Fiba Holding, owned by Turkish billionaire Hüsnü Özyeğin, and the Crankstart Foundation, the investment group owned by Michael Moritz, the chairman of Sequoia Capital, have invested in Getir, a delivery platform. The three investors joined four others committing $128 million to the Istanbul-based group. 

Thistledown Capital, a Canadian investment group founded by Shopify founder Tobias Lütke and his wife, Fiona McKean, has invested in General Fusion, a fusion power group. Thistledown committed an unspecified amount to the Vancouver-based group.

Saidler & Co., a Swiss investment group owned by the Saidler family, has invested in Numbrs, a fintech group. Saidler committed CHF7 million to the Zurich-based group. 

Horizons Ventures, Li Ka-shing’s venture investment group, has invested in Kuato Studios, an educational gaming platform. Horizons committed £4.5 million to the London-based group. 

Seed

La Famiglia (The Family) – a venture group owned by a number of prominent European business families including the family owners connected to the giant appliance maker Miele; members of the Siemens family; the Viessmann family, behind the eponymous German family business; the family behind the Austrian luxury group Swarovski, and family owners of the Belgian chemical group, Solvay, has invested in Archlet, a B2B SaaS application. La Famiglia was one of three investors seeding the Zurich-based group with $2.8 million; it also led the round. 

Valor Capital Group, an investment group owned by Clifford Sobel, a former US ambassador to Brazil, has backed XP Health, a healthcare group. Valor was one of six investors committing $5 million to the Palo Alto-based startup. 

Picus Capital, the Munich-based venture group of venture billionaire Alexander Samwer, has seeded Paytron, a fintech startup. Picus along with one other investor committed A$1.4 million to the Sydney-based startup. 

SFEM Italia, the investment office of the Stevanato family, has invested in PatchAi, an AI healthcare startup. SFEM along with two other investors committed €1.7 million to the Italian startup. 

Series A 

Valar Ventures, one of Peter Thiel’s investment groups, has invested in Moss, a fintech group. Valar was one of three investors committing €21 million to the Berlin-based group. 

Cyrpus-based GEM Capital Holdings, controlled by Russian Anatoly Paliy, who was an executive at the Russian energy giant Gazprom, has invested in TraceAir, a cloud platform for construction companies.  GEM was one of eight investors committing $3.5 million to the Redwood City, California-based group. 

Timeless Investments, an Amsterdam-based investment group owned by the Van Veggel family, has invested in PowerWindow, an energy-producing light-tinted window source. Timeless was one of four investors committing €4 million to the Dutch company. 

Smedvig Capital, the London-based family investment group of the Norwegian Smedvig family, along with Hands Family Office, the investment group of UK private equity specialist Guy Hands, backed proSapient, a London-based AI market research platform. The two investors committed $10 million to the group. 

Presight Capital, an investment group owned by Germany entrepreneur and investor Christian Angermayer, has invested in New Amsterdam Pharma, a biotech group. Presight was one of 13 investors committing €160 million to the Dutch group. 

Series B

Avon Ventures, owned by the Johnson family of Fidelity fame, has invested in Wintermute Trading, a cryptocurrency trading group. Avon was one of nine investors committing $20 million to the London-based group. 

Series C

ATHOS Service, the family office of pharmaceutical billionaire brothers Thomas and Andreas Strüngmann, has backed Konux, a software platform for railways. ATHOS was one of five investors committing €65 million to the Munich-based group. 

Kinnevik, the Swedish investment group owned by the Stenbeck, Klingspor and von Horn families, has invested in Budbee, a logistics-tech company. Kinnevik was one of four investors committing SEK525 million to the Stockholm-based group. 

Series D

Picus Capital, the Munich-based venture group of venture billionaire Alexander Samwer, has invested Personio, an HR platform. Picus was one of seven investors committing $125 million to the Munich-based group. 

D4 Ventures, the investment vehicle of Turkish entrepreneur Hanzade Dogan, has invested in Bloom & Wild, a flower delivery platform. D4 Ventures was one of six investors committing £75 million to the London-based group. 

Series E 

Max Ventures, a New York City-based venture group backed by members of the Swedish Stenbeck family, has invested in K Health, a healthcare group. Max Ventures was among 12 backers of the New York City-based group with a committing of $132 million.
