This week’s family/private investment office deals

Private Equity

Vulcan Capital, owned by Jody Allen, has backed Eat Just, a plant-based food company. Vulcan together with two other investors committed $200 million to the San Francisco-based group. 

Souter Investments, the UK investment office owned by Brian Souter, has joined a syndicate to acquire precision engineer group, Newcastle Tool & Gauge. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.  

Unspecified Rounds

Magnus Rausing, the son of Jörn Rausing, who is worth more than $10 billion, Inbox Capital, owned by the Swedish Wattin family, Ernström, an investment group owned by the fourth generation of the Swedish Hobohm-Hielte family, and Joen Bonnier, of the Bonnier publishing dynasty who is also a partner at the London venture group Atomico, have all invested in Zaver, a fintech platform. The investors joined two others in a commitment worth $5 million for the Stockholm-based group. 

Horizons Ventures, Li Ka-shing’s venture investment group, has invested in AlgiKnit, a biotech group. Horizons was one of two investors committing $2.1 million to the New York City-based group. 

Social Capital, Chamath Palihapitiya’s investment group, together with Winklevoss Capital, owned by brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, have invested in BitClout, a decentralized social network. The two joined nine other investors committing an unspecified amount to the group. 

Mutschler Ventures, a Swiss-based investment group owned by Sylvie Mutschler-von Specht, a member of the family shareholders of Hamburg-based Berenberg Bank, together with ALSTIN Family, the family office of Carsten Maschmeyer, have invested in Blacklane, a chauffeur service. The two investors joined seven others in a commitment worth €22 million for the Berlin-based group. 

Seed

La Famiglia (The Family) – a venture group owned by a number of prominent European business families including the family owners connected to the giant appliance maker Miele; members of the Siemens family; the Viessmann family, behind the eponymous German family business; the family behind the Austrian luxury group Swarovski, and family owners of the Belgian chemical group, Solvay, has invested in y42, a business intelligence group. La Famiglia committed $2.9 million to the Berlin-based startup.  

Nidoco, a Swedish-based investment group owned by Alexander and Albert Ehrnrooth, has seeded Buddy Healthcare. Nidoco led the round worth €2 million for the Finland-based group; one other investor participated. 

R-Cubed Capital Partners, an investment group owned by Stephen A Remondi, president/CEO/co-founder at Exa Corp., has invested in ZwitterCo, an environmental group. R-Cubed was one of two investors committing $5.7 million to the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup. 

SC Nabuboto, an investment group owned by French entrepreneur Denis Thebaud, has invested in Kwik Delivery, a logistics platform. SC Nabuboto was one of eight investors seeding the Nigerian startup with $1.7 million. 

Octava Foundation, which is owned by Octava Capital, a Singapore-based family office owned by an unidentifiable family, has backed ACKTEC, an e-learning platform. Octava led the round worth $1 million for the Singapore-based startup; three other investors participated. 

Titan Capital, a private investment office set up by Snapdeal (an Indian e-commerce platform) founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bans, has invested in SkilloVilla, an e-learning platform. Titan joined four other investors seeding the Indian group with INR21.7 million. 

Series A  

Valar Ventures, backed by Peter Thiel, has invested in Kuda, a fintech group. Valar led the round for the Nigerian group worth $25 million; one other investor participated. 

PBJ Capital, an investment group owned by the founders of Boston-based Arrowstreet Capital – Peter Rathjens, Bruce Clarke, and John Campbell – has invested in Language I/O, a communications platform. PBJ Capital was one of seven investors committing $5 million to the Wyoming-based group. 

Invus, a New York City-based investment business backed by Eric Wittouck, one of Belgium’s richest individuals, together with Boxer Capital, an investment office owned by UK billionaire Joe Lewis, have invested in Asher Bio, a biotech group. The two investors joined three others with a $55 million commitment for the San Francisco-based group. 

F-Prime Capital, the Johnson family, owners of Fidelity, backed venture group, has invested in AppliedVR, a healthcare group. F-Prime Capital was one of six investors committing $29 million to the Californian-based group. 

Pymwymic (Put Your Money Where Your Meaning Is Community), a Dutch-based impact investment firm backed by a number of wealthy families including members of the Brenninkmeijers and the Dutch Jan van Oord family, has invested in Augmenta, an ag-tech platform. Pymwymic together with three other investors committed $8 million to the Greece-based group. 

Series B

Prelude Ventures, the investment group owned by Nat Simons, has invested in Fortify, a 3-D printing group. Prelude was one of four investors committing $20 million to the Boston-based group. 

L Catterton, an investment group backed by Bernard Arnault, has invested in Freetrade, a fintech group. L Catterton together with two other investors committed £35 million to the London-based group. 

Series C 

Tano Capital, an investment group set up and owned by Chuck Johnson, the former co-president of Franklin Templeton Investment, has invested in MyGlamm, a beauty products e-commerce platform. Tano was one of 11 investors committing INR1.8 billion to the Mumbai-based group. 

GMS Holdings, an investment group owned by Ghiath Sukhtian, an Indian pharmaceutical entrepreneur, together with the Mankekar Family Office, owned by Shivanand Shankar Mankekar, have invested in Stelis Biopharma, a biotech group. The two investors were among five committing $125 million to the Indian group. 

Series D

Geoff Tate, the founder of Flex Logix Technologies, has invested in his company through his investment vehicle, Tate Family Trust. The Trust together with Mithril, an investment firm co-founded by Ajay Royan and Peter Thiel, and two other investors have invested in the AI software group. The four investors committed $55 million to the California-based group. 

Vulcan Capital, owned by Jody Allen, Tarsadia Investments, an investment group owned by the US-based Patel family, and Soros Fund Management, owned by George Soro, have invested in Loft, a real estate group. The three investors joined 14 others in a commitment worth $425 million for the Brazilian-based group. 

Skip Capital, the private investment office of the Australian tech billionaire Scott Farquhar, and Grok Ventures, owned by Michael Cannon-Brookes, who co-founded enterprise software group Atlassian with Farquhar, have invested in Airwallex, a fintech platform. The two joined two other investors in a commitment worth $100 million for the Australian-based group. 

Series F 

Eldridge, an investment group set up by billionaire Todd Boehly, together with MSD Capital, Michael Dell’s family office, DNS Capital, the investment office of Gigi Pritzker and Michael Pucker, and The Pritzker Organisation, the investment office owned by Thomas Pritzker, have invested in Dataminr, an analytics AI platform. The four investors joined eight others in a commitment worth $475 million for the New York City-based group.
