This week’s family/private investment office deals

Private Equity

Kinnevik, the Swedish investment group owned by the Stenbeck, Klingspor and von Horn families, has invested in Oda, an online grocery platform. Kinnevik was one of four investors committing €223 million to the Swedish group. 

Unspecified Rounds

Vulcan Capital, the Allen family-owned investment group, has invested in TAE Technologies, an energy management group. Vulcan was one of nine investors committing $280 million to the Californian-based group. 

Seed

Somel Investments, a Canadian investment group owned by Shyam Gupta, has invested in Deeplite, which provides intelligent AI optimization software. Somel was one of seven investors committing $4 million to the Montreal-based startup.  

Peak Capital, an Amsterdam-based investment group owned by Heleen Dura van Oord, who is a member of the family who owns the huge Dutch dredging company Van Oord, has invested in Mibo, a video chat platform. Peak committed €1 million to the startup. 

Series A 

Bicknell Family Holding Company, which is owned by the Bicknell family, who owned the world’s largest Pizza Hut franchisee, has invested in Snappy Kraken, a SaaS marketing platform. Bicknell was one of three investors committing $6 million to the Florida-based group. 

Willoughby Capital, Daniel Och’s family office, has invested in Rock The Bells, an online store for hip-hop culture merchandise. Willoughby was one of 17 investors committing $8 million to the Los Angeles-based group. 

Access Industries, Len Blavatnik’s investment group, has invested in Tripledot Studios, a mobile games studio. Access was one of three investors committing $78 million to the London-based group. 

Bregal Sagemount, an investment group owned by the Brenninkmeijer family, has invested in Scorpion, a healthcare group. Bregal committed $100 million to the Spanish group. 

Series B

North South Ventures, an investment office owned by Brian Miller, a former senior manager at Elliott Management, has invested in Virtualitics, which provides data visualization in virtual reality and augmented reality environments. North South Ventures committed $18 million to the Pasadena-based group. 

Boxer Capital, an investment office owned by UK billionaire Joe Lewis, has invested in GH Research, a biotech group specializing in mental health. Boxer was one of 11 investors committing $125 million to the Dublin-based group. 

Series C

CAM Capital, Bruce Kovner’s family office, has invested in Arcellx, a biotech group. CAM was one of 17 investors committing $115 million to the Maryland-based group. 

Series D 

Eldridge, an investment group owned by billionaire Todd Boehly, has invested in Clearcover, a digital car insurance provider. Eldridge joined three other investors committing $200 million to the Chicago-based group. 

Weatherford Capital, owned by Florida-based brothers Will, Sam, and Drew Weatherford, has invested in The Zebra, an insurance platform. Weatherford was one of two investors committing $150 million to the Austin, Texas-based group. 

Series E

Byers Capital, recently set up by Blake Byers, who was a general partner at GV, the corporate venture part of Google, has invested in Benchling, a cloud-based software platform for biology researchers. Byers was one of 12 investors committing $200 million to the San Francisco-based group.
