Musicians and their investment companies

Paul McCartney/James McCartney

MPL Ventures

Set up last December, MPL Ventures is owned by James McCartney, the son of the legendary musician and songwriter, Paul McCartney. Based in London, MPL is linked to MPL Communications, the New York City and London-based group that manages the business interests of Paul. Last month, MPL invested in Yousician, a Helsinki-based platform designed to help budding musicians learn to play their chosen instrument.

Bono – Paul Hewson

Elevation Partners and The Rise Fund

The lead singer of the Irish band U2 is a savvy investor, famously making more than $50 million with his stake in Facebook when it listed in 2009. He co-founded private equity group Elevation Partners in the early 2000s, which went on to make many successful investments. After Elevation was wound down, Bono co-founded, with Jeff Skoll and Jim Coulter, impact-investment group The Rise Fund in 2016.

Bob Geldof

8 Miles

These days, Geldof is probably better known for his fundraising and impact investment efforts than his days as the lead singer of the punk band, The Boomtown Rats. Of course, much of that was due to his work with Band Aid/Live Aid in the 1980s and other connected music-led fundraising efforts to relieve poverty in Africa. Geldof put those skills together with an impact-led investment group he co-founded in 2008 called 8 Miles – the 8 miles refers to the shortest distance between mainland Europe and Africa in the Straits of Gibraltar. The London-based private equity group, according to its website, has invested in eight businesses across Africa.

JAY-Z

Marcy Venture Partners

Marcy Venture Partners was co-founded in 2019 by Shawn Carter (JAY-Z), Jay Brown, founder of the talent agency Roc Nation, and venture investor, Larry Marcus. Based in San Francisco, Marcy Ventures has been pretty active in its short period of existence, participating in 20 investment rounds and raising close to $100 million in two funds.

Snoop Dogg

Casa Verde Capital

Rapper and businessman Snoop Dogg co-founded Los Angeles-based Casa Verde Capital in 2015 to specifically invest in the burgeoning cannabis sector. And it has done this pretty successfully, making 24 investments connected to the sector, including most recently, Bespoke Financial, a lending platform for cannabis companies.

The Rolling Stones

The iconic rock band might not be too linked to the world of investing these days – or at least not publicly. But in their past, the band were pathfinders in the celebrity wealth management world. Most notably in this respect is the Rolling Stones’ relationship with Prince Rupert Loewenstein, who became famous for managing the financial and tax affairs of the band. He did it very successfully, as acknowledged by members of the band, especially through his tax-saving advice. “Rupie the Groupie” as  Loewenstein became known, went on to lead a consortium of financiers buying the British merchant bank, Leopold Joseph. No longer around, after it was consumed into another bank’s business, Leopold Joseph also became associated with managing the money of the famous rock band.
