Family offices, a famous newspaper, and non-fungible tokens

Last year, the investment world knew little about non-fungible tokens. This year, the digital asset is attracting the interest of a growing number of family offices as this latest deal underlines.

Blue Pool Capital, which managers the money of the two Alibaba founders, Jack Ma and Joe Tsai, earlier this month invested in Animoca Brands. Melbourne, Australia-based Animoca says it’s on a mission “to deliver digital property rights to 2.7 billion gamers, thereby creating a new asset class, enabling play-to-earn economies…” And it’s doing this by investing in NFT-related blockchain businesses.

Animoca is at the forefront of NFT investing and innovation – and investors are getting interested. Not only is it working with gamers, but the company’s decentralized virtual space platform is being used by Hong Kong’s oldest English-language newspaper, the South China Morning Post, to turn its archive of more than 100-years of articles into an NFT collection.

The SCMP says it is doing this through a project called Artifacts, which aims to present an NFT collection of the newspaper’s archives that has captured historical events in the city since the publication was founded in 1903.

The move is the first by any newspaper, but it is likely to be taken up by other publications with similar archives in the future.

This and the other gaming NFT-platforms Animoca has developed has made the company hot property. The Blue Pool Capital investment was part of $130 million in funding that has poured into Animoca since May.

The funding is even more extraordinary given Animoca was kicked off the Australian Stock Market in March for “involvement in cryptocurrency-related activities”. Ironically, that appears to have increased investor interest in the business.

The NFT digital asset world is attracting investors because, unlike bitcoin, they cannot be replaced by a different token because NFTs are unique to their owners. NFT comprises digital assets whose identity and access is confirmed by smart contracts. You can choose to swap an asset via your digital wallet but you will get a different one back.

Blue Pool joined two other notable family-type investors in Animoca since May, RIT Capital Partners and Octava, as well as a host of blockchain/cryptocurrency-orientated investment groups.
