Top family office opens up to sustainable entrepreneurs

One of Europe’s top family offices will manage the money of two prominent sustainable entrepreneurs as it moves to grow its assets in an effort better compete in the investment world.

Kirk Kapital, the family office of Lego heiress, Gunhild Kirk Johansen and her family, is to manage the assets of two of Denmark’s top entrepreneurs, Anders Marcus and Peter Krogsgaard Jørgensen, according to a statement from the Vejle, Denmark-based group.

The two set up the Obton Group, one of the biggest builders and managers of solar assets across Europe. Marcus and Jørgensen sold 45% of the group they founded in 2008 to FSN Capital, a Norwegian private equity fund, at the end of 2020.

Kirk Kapital set up a formal multi-family office structure in 2020 under the establishment of the Kirk Kapital Fondsmæglerselskab (stockbroker company) and Financial Investments brands. But a year earlier, Kirk opened its doors to outside money when it agreed to manage a portfolio of assets owned by the Nissen family, who had sold a majority stake in their eponymous engineering company in 2017.

The structure is a co-investment model, whereby Kirk Capital works with families and investors sharing similar values, but is not actively seeking outside assets.

The family office – based in one of the most iconic offices in Europe – hopes a slow opening up to outside assets will give it the critical mass to compete better in the investment world and improve overall returns. But Kirk Capital is also wanting to keep its closely held family assets approach to managing investments at the same time.

“The additional two portfolios enable us to make further investments in raising the quality of our service offering and increase our external bargaining power. This will benefit both our current and new portfolios,” said Kim Gulstad, CEO of Kirk Kapital, in the statement.

Interestingly, at the end of 2020, one of Denmark’s top investors Bjarne Graven Larsen resigned his position as chairman of Kirk Capital less than two years into the job.

Family member Casper Kirk Johansen took up Larsen’s position after stepping aside from the position when Larsen was appointed.

At the same time as Larsen’s resignation, the family office appointed two new board members, Jens Moberg, chairman of the board of Grundfos, a Danish pump manufacturer and family business owned by the Mobergs, and Peter Beske Nielsen, a former senior manager at Blackrock.
